Overview & Responsibilities

Rackspace is looking for a Systems Engineering Manager to help round out our leadership group and guide our company and Rackers to success. We manage, maintain and architect the infrastructure for our global enterprise systems that supports our customers. We are responsible for Windows and Linux patching, packaging, anti-virus, monitoring and active directory services. We have a focus on changing the future of Rackspace and ensuring that our internal and external customers have reliable, always up infrastructure. We leverage System Center Operation Center (SCOM), Unified Infrastructure Management (UIM), Rackspace Monitoring, New Relic, Red Hat Satellite, Intensive Active Directory, Spacewalk, Ubuntu, Debian and other technologies while leveraging automation solutions (e.g. SALT, SCCM) and Development methodologies to achieve success. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for planning, organizing, and managing the overall day to day activities of high-level System Engineers and Software Developers focused on Enterprise Monitoring solutions.

  • Plan and track your business performance, and prioritize operational expense and licensing costs to ensure financial efficiency

  • Research and identify system areas that need to improve customer experience in a proactive manner; this includes immediate solutions, and long-term strategic paths, that can be deployed off-the-shelf or create new solutions via our Development Team.

  • Work closely with other groups throughout the company, including being a technical resource for internal groups and communicating frequently with engineering, support and development teams to help them improve the operational effectiveness of the systems you manage.

  • Focus time on hiring, coaching, and developing a solid team in order to accomplish team objectives.

  • Analyze operational processes and escalation procedures to identify opportunities for service delivery improvements

  • Assist in planning the strategic vision of the organization for the next 5 years.

Qualifications

Technical Qualifications

  • Experience with common Agile/Scrum best practices (Scrum and Kanban) and other development practices.

  • Skilled in leading projects, especially in deploying, migrating and maintaining live end-user systems.

  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and ability to resolve issues quickly and efficiently.

  • Familiarity with configuration automation tools such as Ansible, Puppet and/or Chef or similar technologies.

  • Understanding of common web technologiesas well as security, compliance and networking fundamentals.

  • Adaptable leadership and project management skills

  • Proven ability to work independently with other department personnel in a very dynamic timeline sensitive work environment.

  • Identifies risks and dependencies for operational execution.

  • ENJOY leading, coaching, mentoring, motivating and growing developers and systems engineers.

  • Demonstration of technical leadership at a Business Unit/Companywide level.

  • Demonstrate attention to detail and the ability to master broad system interdependencies and effectively communicate how a change affects the system as a whole.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITY:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, with 3+ years of management experience leading technical professionals in related areas. At manager’s discretion, high school diploma, or equivalent required, with 3+ years of demonstrated leadership experience in technical environments.
